Sales and AI help for marketing agencies

Marketing agencies sell a service that's hard to compare and easy to churn, often through outbound and referrals rather than their own website. I ran a 25-person sales organisation at an award-winning UK performance marketing agency, and now help agencies build sales systems that don't depend on a few top sellers.

What's different about selling agency services?

The buyer can't see the service before they buy it, and every competitor claims the same things: jargon-free, SME-focused, a partner rather than a supplier. When the pitch sounds the same everywhere, the sales system decides who grows: how leads get worked, how fast proposals go out and how many clients take a second service.

What mistakes do agencies make in sales?

  • Promoting the top seller into management and hoping it works
  • Letting a few top account executives set the culture
  • Managing lead data by instinct rather than a system
  • Not tracking lead-to-deal rates or missed upsells

From my work
I saw each of those mistakes in the UK team I took from missing every H1 target to 109% of quota. The fix was new people, system-led lead management, live SDR coaching and tracking.
In numbers
At the agency, average contract value rose 20%, from £4,400 to £5,300, and average client retention was 3.4 years.
